Fundamentals of Construction Project Estimating & Bidding

Course Description

This is a hands-on course for those in construction-related fields who need to develop pricing and bid submittals such as construction sales personnel, project managers, field supervisors, as well as those seeking career advancement in the construction industry.

Course curriculum addresses all phases of construction project estimating and bidding to estimate projects and submit winning bids from tracking down solicitations through project award.

Areas of focus are for construction contract\subcontract projects with emphasis on:

  • Estimating process
  • Standardization of bid documents
  • Best practices

Course content includes at least one complete “mock” group construction project estimating exercise.

After completing this course, students will be able to :

  • Understand types of construction project bidding processes
  • Apply sound project estimating practices
  • Understand common causes of contractor failure
  • Perform take-offs and develop accurate estimates
  • Review and estimate costs for General Conditions specification requirements
  • Generate and utilize MS Excel estimating spreadsheets
  • Create Work Breakdown Structure for estimating labor costs
  • Develop estimating & bidding process and procedures
  • Vet bid invitations and selectivity of bid solicitations
  • Manage bid and contract documents
  • Automate tools for estimating & bidding
  • Use various other spreadsheets or databases

Prerequisites
Students should be experienced in  building or road construction-related trade specialty, or, architecture/engineering/design occupation.  However, this course does not focus on any one field and has broad appeal for students at all levels of the construction industry.
