The Spencer strainer has passed all specified testing, such as shock, vibration and EMI. The company is currently developing all of the necessary supporting documentation including sparing, maintenance and drawings. Navy approval should follow the delivery of this documentation. The company has installed programmable logic controls on the strainer that sense differential pressure across it, and force it to blow down automatically when it starts to get clogged.
Problem:
Conventional strainers used in various shipboard piping systems require frequent maintenance, are labor intensive, result in system downtime and can be hazardous to personnel and machinery.

Solution:
Under the COSSI program, the Navy has been funded to operationally test the Spencer Self-Cleaning Strainer. Tests are ongoing onboard USS DULUTH (LPD-6). Upon completion of these tests, the strainer will require shock, vibration and EMI testing to qualify for military use.

Fleet Impact:
Widespread use of self-cleaning strainers will result in a significant reduction in regular maintenance on all shipboard systems employing strainers.

Applications:
All classes of ships
